Kevin Hille is a Partner at OKT specializing in complex litigation about contemporary and historical Indigenous rights issues.

The power and possibilities of an approach rooted within Indigenous legal orders have shaped Kevin’s career and are foundational to his ongoing commitment to OKT’s clients. Before joining our firm, Kevin practiced law in New Zealand, working within a bi-cultural legal framework that recognizes both the English common law and tikanga Māori. Drawing on his experiences there, including appearing extensively before the Waitangi Tribunal, Kevin recently co-authored a book called “Treaty Law: The Treaty of Waitangi in Law and Practice” published by Thomson Reuters.

During his time at OKT Kevin has been involved in many high profile matters, including acting as Class Counsel on the First Nations Drinking Water Class Action (Curve Lake First Nation v Canada) which settled for $8 billion in infrastructure funding and compensation for over 250 First Nations, as well as in the continuing class action about drinking water (Shamattawa First Nation v Canada). He is also one of the lead counsel on a proposed national class action about housing on reserve (St Theresa Point First Nation v Canada).

Kevin's commitment and skill is unwavering. He excels in both oral and written advocacy, having drafted submissions for all levels of court in Canada and appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada and appellate and trial courts across the country. His experience encompasses complex motions, applications, judicial reviews, and appeals.

Kevin is a valued mentor and support to OKT’s younger lawyers, and contributes his time regularly to law schools in Toronto and Victoria, providing guest lectures for students on Aboriginal law topics.

Kevin Hille's services are provided through a Professional Corporation.
