Innu Day Schools

Acting on behalf of Innu Nation and three of its members, OKT, Budden Hiscock and Phillips Barristers brought a proposed class action about the schools that operated in Labrador Innu communities before the Innu took control of their own education system. Between 1949 and 2009, schools operated in the Innu communities of Sheshatshiu, Old Davis Inlet, Davis Inlet and Natuashish. Canada was the main funder of these schools. Newfoundland and Labrador oversaw the schools.

The case was launched in January 2024 in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador against Canada and Newfoundland & Labrador.

The case was certified as a class action in August 2026.  This means that the case can proceed as a class action.  The court certified both the Survivor Class and the Government class. The Survivor Class is made up of people who attended an Innu Day School in Labrador between 1949 – 2009. The Government class is made up of Innu Nation, Mushuau Innu First Nation, and Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation.
