Corey Shefman is a partner at OKT focusing on advocacy in court and at administrative tribunals, Indigenous governance, and environmental law. In addition, Corey provides general counsel services to several First Nations.

Corey is called to the Bar in Manitoba, Ontario the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Alberta, and regularly acts for clients in all five jurisdictions. He has litigated before judges and tribunals across Canada, including in the courts of Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, the federal Courts, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. He has taught the practice of Aboriginal law at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law.

Corey grew up just north of Toronto. He received his BA from McGill University, an MA from Cardiff University in the UK and his LLB from the University of Manitoba. In his free time, Corey enjoys baking (you may have seen him on the first season of CBC's Great Canadian Baking Show), and reading and watching science fiction.

Representative Work

  • Protected a sacred area in a Treaty 9 First Nation's traditional territory by securing an interim injunction against a mining company.
  • Lead counsel for Indigenous governing bodies at multiple environmental and regulatory proceedings, including the Nunavut Impact Review Board, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Canada Energy Regulator, and Manitoba Clean Environment Commission.
  • Negotiated and drafted exploration agreements and long-term relationship agreements for First Nations with mining and nuclear sector proponents.
  • Counsel for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs in an intervention before the Public Utilities Board that secured a discounted Hydro rate for on-reserve residents.
  • Worked with Anishinaabe and Cree nations to support their traditional lawmaking processes in preparing and implementing election laws and other laws.
  • Bringing a defamation action against a prominent online commenter who had targeted a community leader with racist comments.
  • Expanding the scope of an Inquest to consider the role that systemic racism played in the death.
