Advising on Federal and Provincial Legislation

OKT has a broad range of experience in advising clients across Canada on federal, provincial and territorial legislation that affects Indigenous governments and organizations. Our lawyers advise on both the day-to-day impacts of legislation as well as on the development of legislation and policy.

Our lawyers advise on matters related to the Indian Act almost every day – from issues related to bylaws and elections to matters dealing with land use permits and designations.

We also advise on the First Nations Land Management Act, including whether to opt into the regime and the development of Land Codes, as well as the First Nations Fiscal Management Act.

Our expertise also includes a broad range of other legislation that directly affects Indigenous communities, including federal, provincial, and territorial environmental legislation, the National Energy Board Act, the Fisheries Act, and many others. We also have specialized expertise in the unique environmental regimes applicable in the NWT, Nunavut and Yukon.
